Surface-water studies include collection of new streamflow and water-quality data, as well as compilation of existing streamflow and climatic data. Proper data collection and use of established protocols are imperative for good quality data. For example, a width-integrated sample (collection of the sample in increments across the stream section) is the most important aspect of stream and river sampling. It has been well documented that stream sampling by a "bank grab" is a poor representation of the water quality of the entire stream width.
